Lesson Plan (Plants)

Topic: Plants

Sub-topic: Life cycle of a plant

Level: Primary 3

Class: Science Room - equipped with computer and internet access

 

THE SET UP

Unit goals:

· To instill pupils’ value and appreciation towards their environment,

· To make the pupils aware that living things such as plants go through several stages in their growth.

 

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, children are able to:

· list down and draw the basic needs of plants to grow,

· arrange and explain the stages of plant life cycle correctly,

· grow and take care of their plants, and record their growth.

 

Materials:

· a small box,

· seeds,

· manila cards,

· Plant life cycle on Microsoft Power Point slides,

· cotton wool, plastic cups and a pail of water,

· classwork sheets, recording sheets and homework sheets.

 

THE LESSON

Set induction:

Ø The teacher will shake a small box that consists of some seeds and ask pupils to guess what is/are in it:

- “Can you tell me what is inside this box?”

- “Are you sure that it is ..….?”

- “How do you know that it is ……?”

- “What makes you think so?”

Ø After the teacher get the expected answer (seeds), the teacher will open the box and reveal the seeds:

- “Why do you think I bring these today?”

- “Where do you think seeds come from?”

- “Are they alive?”

- “Why do you think so?”

- “Can you give me two plants that grow from seed?”

 

Introduction:

Ø The teacher will tell a story called “Jenny’s Bean” (refer to Jenny's Bean Story). After the story the teacher will recall and discuss the story with the pupils orally:

- “What is the whole story about?”

- “How did Jenny’s bean grow?”

- “What did Jenny do to make the bean grow?”

- “What helped the bean to grow?”

Ø From the discussion the pupils (in groups) will list down and draw the basic needs that helped the bean seed to grow, on a manila card. The teacher will then collect the completed work for display.

 

Lesson proper:

Activity 1-

Ø The pupils will discuss in groups, the stages of the mung bean plant from the Microsoft Power Point slide 1 (refer to Life-Cycle of mung bean plant).

Ø After discussion, each group will explain the arrangement of the mung bean life cycle. After all the groups have done the explanation, the teacher will play the slides.

Activity 2-

Ø The teacher will ask the pupils to arrange the stages in the life cycle of a plant through the use of virtual experiment at this website.

 

THE CLOSE

Closure:

Ø Teacher will summarize the lesson by asking pupils to state the basic needs in growing a plant which they have listed and drawn, and name the stages in the plant life cycle.

 

Assessment:

Ø The teacher will distribute worksheets (refer to Plant Classwork Sheet) for pupils to label the stages of a plant life cycle.

Ø For a continuous assessment, the pupils will grow their own plant using the seeds that the teacher has provided and record their growth for two weeks time in the recording sheets (refer to this PDF file).

Homework:

After the lesson, the teacher will give the pupils their homework sheets regarding the plant life cycle. They will cut and paste the pictures according to the correct stages. (Refer to Plant Homework Sheet)
